My boss is upset I haven't been able to find someone to work for $10 an hour.

I needed to renew the work ad for customer service. I also noticed that another had had expired for a different position she's hiring for. I figured I'd ask if she wanted me to renew that one as well and this is how it went.

Me: I need to renew the ad for customer service. Do you want me to renew the ad for the other position Her: No. I also don't want you to renew the ad if we're not going to hire anyone.
  • 05
Me: The kid I wanted to hire ended up getting classes for the days I need someone and there hasn't been anyone else that is promising.
  • 06
Her: Fine, but you need to hire someone. So she's getting upset at me because no one wants to work for $10 an hour. I'll get applications but as soon as they hear that the pay is $10 and hour they stop responding.

Of course, she's never wrong and I'm just refusing to hire someone. Update: She thinks people are ridiculous to think they deserve more that $10 an hour for running a register. Her definition of running a register:

She LOVES to yell at her employees and sometimes customers. She got mad at a deaf lady. She slammed a door while she had customers in the store. She's sent people home crying.

anonymous2278. Post the pay rate in the ad. Why be coy about it? If that's the rate, that's the rate and you should be upfront. They won't message at all if that's not sufficient, and the ones who apply anyway are aware that the pay is low.

WayneKrane Yeah, you're just wasting time not putting in how much you'll pay. I've turned down quite a few jobs because the recruiter finally tells me their offer and it's way below what I currently make and sometimes less than my first job over 10 years ago. Such a waste of time not to divulge that from the get go

Few_Acanthocephala30 I won't apply for a job if it doesn't list the pay because I know 99% of the time it's going to be low as . Or when it gives a massive range of pay, because it's almost always the bottom number in the range and if it's corporate you're unlikely ever going to get close to the mid-top end of that range.

1trekker_fanboi ⚫ I wouldn't for ten bucks an hour. It's offensive. It's not your fault of course. She sounds charming.

ReaverRogue Arrange a zoom meeting with a potential applicant, invite your boss along, watch her face when you bring up the pay and the applicant goes "lol srsly?" In her face, then quietly suggest that she's not offering enough. Up to her if she listens or not.

flyingemberKC Missouri's minimum wage is $12.30. Missouri is one of the ten lowest cost states Some people have no perspective that a place it's cheaper to live thinks that $10 is too low

Peterthinking. $10 an hour. Zero experience? Gaps in your resume? Horrible references? We don't care! There. Post that. You'll get someone.

PianistMore4166 Tell your boss that it's 2024, not 2014. $10/hr is poverty wages in today's economy. ¨, even back in 2014 $10/hr was still poverty wages.

pinkfootthegoose. I suggest that you suggest to your boss that they pay themselves $10 an hour. If it is sufficient for a new hire it's sufficient for them.

Ok-Willow-9145 You're lucky to get applicants. I don't bother with job listings that don't include a salary or salary range. No mention of compensation means they routinely lowball people.

ZeroXTML1 · Feels like a case of "I would have been happy to make $10 when I was a kid!!!! " lol

EmmalouEsq I was making that 22 years ago in a small banking call center. That's why it's a slap in the face. Nobody can live on that, much less thrive and feel a sense of accomplishment in life.
